Saab Stories

Saab repair business on Thermal Drive. Although there seems to be a Mercedes in there as well.

Southside Market & BBQ

Technically, Southside Market isn't in Austin. It's actually in Elgin, just right down 290 east of Austin. If you're headed east away from Austin, it's just on the right as you come into town. We recommend the Brisket & Sausage Combo Plate.

If It's In Stock....

Dixi and I pass this sign at Walker Tire every day and I always seem to get a little chuckle out of it.

Austin Renaissance Hotel

This is the Austin Renaissance Hotel at The Arboretum. I think the atrium inside this place is just beautiful.

More From The Domain

The Domain is a fairly upscale shopping area in North Austin. I think it has a real urban feel to it.

At The Domain

I think we're finally back. This flu thing has really kicked our butts. Dixi is still sneezing a bit and having to blow her nose constantly, but no fever for the past 4 days. I'm feeling fine except that my right ear is still blocked and I can't really hear out of it. But all in all, we're doing better.

Dixi and I have our 10th wedding anniversary coming up soon, so I'm keeping my eye out for a good gift. I'm thinking maybe something from here. After 10 years up putting up with me, it's probably the least I could do for her!

Our Apologies

Sorry for not having a post in the past few days.

Dixi got home Friday and was running a fever. Sure enough, I wasn't feel very well either. We crawled into bed around 8:30 Friday evening and didn't really get out of bed until almost noon on Sunday. We had a doctor visit this morning and it was confirmed that we have the flu. I'm almost over it but Dixi is still suffering through it. Hopefully we'll be back on our feet 100% in the next couple of days. See ya then.

Austin Wild Life

I don't think it ever looked quite like this though!

These guys were seen on North Lamar at The Corner Shoppe Mall. It's not everyday that you spot a bear on the streets of Austin. Of course, if you're in need of an actual cow hide or the skull from a longhorn, then this is your kind of place.

The Gault Homestead

Included as part of a 320-acre land grant awarded to J. P. Whelin in payment for his service to the Republic of Texas Army. This property has had a long and varied history. Soon after he was granted the land, Whelin sold it to Nathaniel C. Raymond, who in turn sold it to John M. Gault two years later.

Gault built a log cabin on the Whelin Grant in the 1850's, and he and his family established a farm. In 1855 they purchased adjoining land from Captain Nelson Merrill and soon thereafter built a larger home on that tract of land.

Gault died about 1865 and was buried in Merrilltown  Cemetery. The homestead property remained in his family until 1892, when it was sold to William and Edna Graves. They maintained the Gault Homestead as tenant property for a number of years, during which the original cabin was enlarged with a board-and-batten addition. R. C. Cox acquired the property in 1929, and his family lived in the cabin through the following decade.

After a succession of owners, the Gault Homestead became part of a modern housing development in the 1980's. It remains as a reminder of the Merrilltown community and of the county's early rural heritage.

Threadgills

Threadgills is quintessential Austin. If you want good down-home cooking, this is the place to go. There are 2 locations in Austin. The one in this picture is located on North Lamar and there is the "World Headquarters" located on Riverside Drive. The food is great, the portions are huge, and even if no one is playing that night, the jukebox is one of the best around. Threadgills has been credited with starting the Austin music scene. Janice Joplin even waitressed here during the 60's and started her singing career at this location.

An Austin Snow Angel

This was the first thing I noticed when I went onto the patio this morning to see the snow that had fallen overnight. I took this at about 8:30 this morning. By the time the snow had melted earlier this afternoon Dixi and I had counted 4 more created by kids in the neighborhood.

The Triangle

The Triangle sits at the intersection of Lamar and Guadalupe, north of the "The Drag" and UT campus. The Triangle is a mix of apartment homes, restaurants and other retail areas.

Austin's New Leslie?

Everyone around Austin has seen, or at least heard of, Leslie.

Leslie's real name is Albert Leslie Cochran. He's a homeless man who's become a local celebrity of sorts and advocates for the homeless. For more information and pictures, please look here, here and here. I bring up Leslie because he has made a name for himself for being "on the street". The guy I came across today is one Dixi and I have seen a number of times on the drive home up North Lamar. He is usually on one of the corners at Lamar and Rundberg and he's always jumping around and dancing away. Today I managed to get a picture of him. I'm hoping in the next few days that I can get some video of him. I think this guy could one day rank right up there with Austin's Leslie.

Braker Pointe - Braker Lane & MoPac

I came across this at the Braker Pointe buildings off of Braker and MoPac in North Austin. I haven't been able to find any information on the buildings but I find it interesting that a business park has been built right next to it.

Here's some more photos of the general area surrounding the house. If anyone has any information on this please let me know.
